Apparently the only sure remedy is performing and Archive and install to refresh your system then performing the combined update. Be sure to backup your system disk first, making a clone of your boot disk, because in some cases as in mine the problem seems to also keep the archive and install from completing properly.

It wasn't APE, at least not on my system. Turns out PathFinder might've installed a different version of Stuffit Engine than Entourage was expecting.
According to the system log, Entourage tries to load a Stuffit.
