The way he sees Daisy may not be how she is in reality, just as the American dream might not be what it seems. I like how you talk about the unfair realities of the American Dream during this time. Many Americans, like Jay Gatsby, gained their fortunes through organized crime and other illegal activities like bootlegging because the money was more important to them than being respectful, law abiding citizens.
It is interesting to see how respectful, law abiding citizens are more or less left in the dust. George Wilson really embodies that up until he takes matters into his own hands. So even the corruption within the elite society trickled down into the laboring class. The Great Gatsby represents the American Dream, gone wrong. It has been expanded on through the years and now incorporates ideas of attaining freedom, wealth and power. In the s when 'The Great Gatsby' was written the Jazz Age was taking hold and the American Dream became more about material possessions.
The characters in the novel are portrayed as the cause of corruption, materialism, and immorality within society. In the novel, the dream is portrayed. The characters reveal carelessness, hypocrisy, dishonesty, and arrogance which all stem from their excessive amount of wealth and fame. Fitzgerald portrays a recurring literary phenomenon of an extended metaphor throughout his book demonstrate the implicit comparison between wealth and its unseen repercussions.
The characters wealth and fame leads to carelessness which can be seen in their actions and lack of concern for other people and things. Gatsby portrays carelessness through the lack of concern for robbery, vandalism, and other dangers which may occur to his home.
Gatsby utilizes all his wealth to entertain himself and guests when in reality it is all futile. Similarly, such carelessness and lack of concern is seen through the affluent couple, Tom and Daisy. Nick states that Tom and Daisy are uncaring and absent minded people who believe that any problem which may transpire can be easily solved by their wealth.
